St. Dimitrie Church Construction Progress

by Sam Giavara, P.E., Program Manager

This is my third progress report and approximately 14 weeks since I took over the construction responsibilities for the church and report the following regarding the progress and activities:I have virtually completed the “closing in” of the entire building with the following work remaining:

* brick work on front of the church
* window sills for the entire building (note all windows have been installed)
* stucco finishes for the entire building
* front steps
* doors for the entire building
* installation of the fire protection water tank and lines
* paving & catch basin installation on the front side of the church
* Loaming and seeding the remaining areas of the site.
* light pole installation, guard rail and detention basin fencing
* final pavement course
* landscaping

The above remaining outside building and site work will be completed within six to eight weeks!

Over the past 14 weeks I spent much of my time and some $ 800,000 of re-work cost resolving design and construction errors! Regarding the inside of the church a major issue being addressed is the raising of the ceilings in the altar and choir area. In the altar area the top of the Iconostas was touching the ceiling and in the choir area the floor to ceiling height at the front wall was less than 7 feet. Both cases were simply unacceptable. The redesign resulted in installing vaulted ceilings in both areas that created major structural changes to the existing steel structure. We are also making changes to the altar area floor plan as well as in the main lobby.

In addition, the heating, ventilating and air conditioning system shown on the construction plans were incomplete and inadequate with no provision for wall and ceiling penetrations and space to locate the equipment! I am currently working to resolve this problem and expect to have a solution in the next week. In addition, I have been working on the elevator problem and hope to have a solution in the next week as well. My goal is to have those remaining issues resolved by the end of August so that from September going forward I can focus on completing the construction. The church picnic has been scheduled for September 28 at the new Church in Easton. I plan to give all of you who attend a personal tour of the new church facilities. So please take advantage of this opportunity and attend and see for yourselves the tremendous progress we have made in a short period of time!

Once in a Lifetime for a Lifetime

by V. Rev. Fr. Vasile Hategan

(This is an article written by Fr.V. Hategan when St. Mary’s church was built in Cleveland. It is good to pay attention to his wisdom.)

When the last ring of the hammer has been stilled, and the final stroke of the painter’s brush has ceased; when the last hedges have been planted and the garden lies quiet and serene, you will stand back in solemn pride and say: “How lovely is Thy Church, O Lord our God”.

This will be the visible emblem of the pride we take in our religion; a symbol of our faith in the future of Romanian Orthodoxy. All who gaze upon it will immediately recognize that here are mobilized Christians to whom material possessions are a means of strengthening spiritual values. It will be OUR church, as precious to us as any plot of ground upon which our ancestors ever established themselves.

The church is more than stone and brick and steel and wood. It is the embodiment of our faith, the tangible manifestation of our allegiance, the instrument by which we become better men and women. It is a fortress of moral stability in a world which desperately needs the message of hope, faith and love.

The church is no luxury, but a vital necessity to the enrichment of our character and the molding of the lives of our children. In every detail it is designed for the comprehensive use of the whole congregation. Nothing uneconomical or extravagant has been introduced. The fact that we have acquired an 8 and one half acre plot assures the use of the site for a limitless period of time.

As we have inherited from our forefathers, so shall we bequeath to our children a living example of devotion, courage and sacrifice. This is our sacred opportunity. This is our “once in a lifetime…for a lifetime.”

Ladies’ Auxiliary

Reported by Ann Nastu, President

Many thanks to the following ladies who made the prosfora; Kiratsa Jombur for two weeks in July, Rodica Ianus for the month of August, and Audrey Fatsy who will make the prosfora for September.

The recent Festival ‘06 was a huge success, and it could not have happened without the untiring Chief Cook and Baker, Psa. Marian Coca and her crew who went above and beyond the call to get the job done on time. Marian had a good crew of ladies who helped make pitas and bread.

Our ladies came through with flying colors, as usual, at our annual Festival. Every member and many non-members lent a hand, and made this a very lucrative endeavor for our church. Many thanks for our good people and God’s blessings to you all.

You can purchase your tickets in advance for The Eastern Orthodox Women's Council Annual/Luncheon Fashion Show. Cost is $30.00 per ticket. See Audrey Fatsy or Florence Marsala.

Sunday School Corner

Reported by Psa. Louisa Todeasa, Director

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome back to Sunday School!! We are so excited to have another wonderful teaching staff this year with some great new teachers added to our roster. We thank you all in advance for your time and dedication! Listed below are our teachers this year for each grade level:

This year, Church School begins on Sunday, September 28th. Immediately following communion, students in ALL grades will go downstairs to their classrooms.

If you did NOT receive a Sunday School Registration Form from Nancy Cheung from St. Nicholas Church, please email Psa. Louisa Todeasa at: louisa.todeasa@gmail.com. Otherwise, please fill out the form and return as soon as possible. We hope to have much parental involvement this year. Please do not hesitate to call us with any questions, concerns, or ideas.

“Of all Holy works, the education of children is the most holy,” said St. Theophan the Recluse. We who are blessed by knowing the light of the teaching of our Holy Orthodox Church must aspire to pass it onto our children, so that they may grow up in this Holy light!

Parents, please make a commitment to bring your children regularly! When they are absent, the program goes on, and they miss many important things! All are welcome to attend. With God's help, we hope our youth will progress in wisdom, reason, and every good deed for the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ and magnification of His Holy Church.

If you have questions, please call Father Cornel or Preoteasa Louisa at 261-3490.

Choir Notes

Gina Cook, Choir Director

We would like to encourage everyone to sing along with the Choir and the Cantors at the Sunday services. We would also like to invite new members to join our choir!

Linda Bellas Elf and family would like to express their gratitude to those in the St. Dimitrie community who offered their heartfelt condolences with the passing of devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Gary R. Elf. God Bless and thank you.

Our parishioners may remember a 10 year young, Zachary “Zac” Coe appearing at St. Dimitrie’s Christmas concerts playing percussion with his dad, David, a music teacher, author and professional guitarist. Well, 16 year old Zac, a first honors student and inductee into the Tri-M music honors society at Fairfield Warde high school, has been chosen, through a nationwide talent search of young musicians, to appear in the Broadway production of “13”. “13” is a new musical penned by multi-talented Tony award winner producer Jason Robert Brown and is a new concept where musicians appear on stage along with the actors. The musical will be opening with great excitement on October 5th at the Bernard B. Jacobs theatre on Broadway. Young Zac has already earned music scholarships and upon graduation will be choosing a university to expand his musical experience. He has appeared professionally since the age of 9 and is already a songwriter and recording artist. Proud parents, Stacy and David, brother, Dylan, and grandmother, Mary Tambakis are eagerly looking forward to his Broadway opening!

A hearty congratulations also to Andronica Bica, who was awarded a $10,000 scholarship to UCONN this fall. Her hard work and dedication to her studies is a wonderful example to all students who want to pursue a dream for a bright and productive future. LA MULTI ANI!

Victoria Balamaci thanks her St. Dimitrie families for the many visits, phone calls, get well cards, flowers and gifts received during the months of July and August. She is especially grateful to Fr. Cornel and Fr. George for their visits and prayers.

Note şi Comentarii

FESTIVAL’08.

We encourage those parishioners who would like to schedule a Fellowship Hour (Coffee An’) to please sign up ahead of time and at least by Thursday of the week you wish to sponsor since the calendar fills up quickly.

The Fellowship Hour can be sponsored in memory of departed loved ones, in celebration of a birthday or anniversary, or for any other special event. The cost of sponsoring the Coffee Hour (where the Parish Council buys and prepares the coffee and pastries) is $50. You may also bring your own food and coffee and provide setup and cleanup afterwards.

Please note: Some Sundays are already taken for special events (* *). There will also be some Sundays when auxiliary organizations will have an activity planned that is not noted in this calendar.
