Learning is Part of Our Work of Salvation
There are three main activities within the life of a church: 1) the activity of worship, which is, of course, the first and the most important; 2) the activity of fellowship; and 3) the activity of teaching.
These three activities were present in the life of the church from its beginning. We read in the Holy Bible that St. Paul preached on Pentecost Day and afterward “those who gladly received his word were baptized: and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostle's doctrine and fellowship , in the breaking of the bread, and in prayers ...” (Acts 2:41-42).
As we see the Christians of the early church were gathered together in “ the breaking of the bread, and in prayers .“ In other words they were participating in the worship of the church.
Worship is an important part of the church. In the church we pray to God, we give Him thanks, and we glorify Him. In the church we receive the sacraments of the Church: Baptism, the Seal of the Gift of the Holy Spirit (Christmation), Confession, Healing, Marriage, Priesthood, and Holy Communion. The whole worship of the church is around the sacrament of Holy Communion, “the breaking of the bread,” as it is called in the book of the Acts of the Apostles.
Fellowship is also an important part of the church. Within the church we become a community – even more: a family. We become brothers and sisters in Christ our Lord and Savior. Within the community of the church we manifest first hand our love, our forgiveness, and the other Christian virtues. The church is essential element without which no community can grow or even survive. We are the community of believers in Christ.
The early community also “ continued steadfastly in the apostle's doctrine .” In other words they were involved in the teaching of the doctrine, the content of our faith. Teaching is also very important. Let's remember that the baptisms of three thousand men were the result of St. Peter's preaching, as he taught them the good news of Christ. Even more, as a rule, learning precedes the other two activities of the church. However, the three activities of the church are intertwined as we participate in the work of salvation.
I write this meditation in order to stress the importance of teaching in the life of the church and our personal faith.
We have good worship in our church. Your clergy, the choir and the cantors try hard to make the worship a very spiritual experience for you. We have a beautiful church where we can worship our Lord and God. The recent Festival was a wonderful expression of the fellowship we experience in our church.
However, we need now to stress the educational activity of our church, and I encourage you to take heed and make it a top priority for you and you family. In fact Jesus said “…this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (17:3).
The Kingdom of God depends on our knowledge of God. Let us not spare any time to learn more about our God. Let us take advantage of the programs provided by our church. We have Bible Studies in English and Romanian. During the Christmas Lent we will meet every Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to pray but also to learn. The subject of our learning is “The Nativity of Our Lord as Reflected in the Bible”.
I especially encourage the parents, grandparents, and godparents to bring the children to the Sunday School where they will learn about God.
Jesus said: “Let the children come to me!” Let them come to Jesus by bringing them to His house of worship and to the Sunday School where they will learn firsthand of God's divine knowledge.
Our Church Sunday School has started on Sunday October 11. It meets from 10:a.m. to 10:45. This time was chosen in order to accommodate our two services. It is not too late to start bringing them, if you haven't done so.
Our teachers under the capable leadership of Kathy Olschan, Andrea Fatsy, and Betsy Cipu take this responsibility very seriously. They understand how important the Christian education is for our children. The church, besides the home, is the only place where our children are taught our faith and connect with God.
We understand that there are many are responsibilities we have to take for our children, but there is no doubt this is the most important. Jesus said: What is it worth if we gain the whole world and lose our soul?
Dear parents, bring your children to the Sunday School, to the church and to God. But all of us we should use any opportunity given to us to learn more about God, to worship Him, and joining our great community in good and blessed fellowship.

Our Ladies worked exceptionally hard at the Festival! God bless them all.
Holy Bread ( Prosfora ) Donations : If you would like to donate the Prosfora f or church services, it can be ordered from the Ladies' Auxiliary (three or four loaves) for a fee of $20.00 by calling Psa. Mariana Coca at (203) 373-0410.
There is a food collection box in the vestibule from now until the need is met to help feed the hungry. Please bring you donation of imperishable goods.
We are very glad that many members of our parish sponsor the coffee hour on Sundays after the Divine Liturgy. However, we would like to inform the sponsors about their responsibilities.
The responsibilities of those sponsoring a coffee hour include preparation, setting up, and cleaning up. It's been very hard to get volunteers to prepare the coffee hour.
The Ladies' Auxiliary always welcomes new members. Please join our hardworking organization. The annual membership fee is only $25.00. Now that we're settled in our new church in Easton, we welcome your help and fresh new ideas.
